ARLINGTON, Va. — Bloomberg Law announced the availability of its latest report, “Bridging the Gap: The New Realities of Law School and Legal Practice,” which details sentiments on law school training and expectations for graduates to meet the changing demands of the legal industry.
Bloomberg Law’s latest Path to Practice survey gathered insights from more than 1,800 attorneys, students, and faculty to pinpoint exactly how expectations are evolving, especially around technology-driven shifts. The survey also dives into reasons to practice, and the transformation in how students are training to be practice ready.
Explore these topics and more:
- Most attorneys feel that AI is growing faster than they can keep up, while half believe that AI will reduce the number of opportunities for graduating law students.
- However, most attorneys also expect new attorneys to come in understanding the legal ethics of AI, and almost half expect new attorneys to be AI-literate.
- Nearly two-thirds of 3Ls have interacted with real or simulated clients, but only about a third report feeling somewhat proficient when it comes to client counseling or case management.
- While two-thirds of law school faculty report having opted in to workshops, trainings, and courses to integrate new technologies into their curriculum, about a quarter still have not taken any trainings related to new technologies.
“Our latest report and analysis demonstrates the profound shift in technology across the legal profession for attorneys and law schools alike,” said Cesca Antonelli, editor-in-chief, Bloomberg Industry Group. “Our report is a pivotal resource to equip legal professionals with actionable insights to better anticipate and adapt to these changes.”
