TESTIMONIAL
Evelyn Tan, Knowledge Management Staff Attorney
Sheppard Mullin
Describe your role as a knowledge management staff attorney at the firm.
I mostly do research and advise on research strategies. I also provide an overview of our research resources to lateral associates during their onboarding process and engage in other training, which can include the development of research sources, or knowledge pages, for the firm’s practices.
Do you recommend Bloomberg Law to new hires? If so, what products do you recommend?
I like to recommend Bloomberg Law to the newly hired lateral associates. I strongly recommend the Practice Centers because of their intuitive organization, including practice tools, treatises, and Practical Guidance. For example, we recently hired several lateral attorneys for the Labor & Employment Group. I successfully helped an attorney by recommending employment policy materials from Bloomberg Law. (I was aware that one of our L&E partners is a strong proponent of the L&E treatises on Bloomberg Law.) I also found the State Law Summaries and State Chart Builders very helpful. The Chart Builders really save a lot of time and effort. I also like to recommend Bloomberg Law when I advise attorneys on research strategies.
What areas are you particularly interested in?
I specialize in legal and business research. In my current role, we have a business research specialist, so I do not research business information as much as I did in my prior position as an analyst. In my previous job, I constructed and searched M&A deals and used Bloomberg to look up companies, particularly public companies. I also used Bloomberg Law’s In Focus: Deal Points for its perspectives and analysis.

How do you use Bloomberg Law for litigation practice?
In my current role, for litigation research I regularly search opinions and dockets, such as Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings, which often have twists and turns. I found that it is much easier to search bankruptcy filings on Bloomberg Law than on any other database. I find the docket tracking feature a great resource. If I need to search certain pleadings related to a particular judge, I will always start with Bloomberg Law.
I also search Bloomberg Law for news and business intelligence information. I regularly set up news alerts and docket tracks on Bloomberg Law. The docket tracking is extremely useful.
“I rely heavily on the news from the Bloomberg Terminal. If I need to search for a company or a person, then I search those specific fields in the search template, which is really the strength of a Bloomberg news search. I set up news alerts regularly, which is an invaluable feature.”
What other Bloomberg Law resources do you rely on?
In general, I consult treatises, practice guides, practice tools, and other materials in the Practice Centers, which, as I mentioned, are organized in an intuitive and helpful way.
I have found Bloomberg Law very helpful if I am researching a particular judge.
Also, the Litigation Intelligence Center, particularly the docket search, is very helpful.
“Bloomberg Law has very good legal and nonlegal content; excellent customer service, including the Help Desk; and is “free” to search, that is, everything is prepaid. I don’t worry about transactional research costs.”
Besides bankruptcy research, how else do you use Bloomberg Law Dockets?
I use Bloomberg Law docket search for federal and state cases as well as for international cases. Bloomberg Law has more state cases than other databases. Bloomberg Law’s case tracking is a great feature of the product.
Do you use Bloomberg Law for news coverage?
I rely heavily on the news from the Bloomberg Terminal. If I need to search for a company or a person, then I search those specific fields in the search template, which is really the strength of a Bloomberg news search. I set up news alerts regularly, which is an invaluable feature.
How does Bloomberg Law compare with other products you have used?
Bloomberg Law Dockets certainly has more state cases than Westlaw or Lexis. The organization of the Practice Center’s materials is unique and comprehensive.
How long have you been using Bloomberg Law?
I have used Bloomberg Law for more than four years.
Would you endorse it?
Definitely! Bloomberg Law has very good legal and nonlegal content; excellent customer service, including the Help Desk; and is “free” to search, that is, everything is prepaid. I don’t worry about transactional research costs.
